The Spartan Girls Athletic Club was organized in Brooklyn in 1910, and its women’s basketball team, known as the Spartan Girls, were the original sister team to the Smart Set Athletic Club, an African American social and athletic organization.

The Spartan Girls played their home games at Avon Hall in what is now Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, the 71st Regiment Armory on Park Avenue in Manhattan, and at the Manhattan Casino in Harlem, with music by the J. Nimrod Jones Orchestra during halftimes and afterward.

They dominated the competition in New York and New Jersey with a roster that featured Edith Trice as well as the Harris sisters, Bernadette, Mary, and Genevieve.

The squad also raised money for charities such as the Mother’s Day Nursery of Brooklyn.
