Exhibition 2
Early Black Women’s Basketball
During the Black Fives Era of basketball, there were dozens of African American women’s teams throughout many parts of the United States that emerged, competed, and thrived right alongside their male counterparts. Some became nationally famous while others were local and obscure, becoming forgotten or unidentified today.
Yet these squads, their players, and their organizers created a path, a space, and a trajectory for the success of women within basketball and for Black female athletes as a whole.
This exhibition celebrates those pioneering women and their journeys.
I would love the Big East warmup shirt. Will you make that available for purchase?
Hi Muriel! It was available on the BIG EAST merchandise website, and we posted about it on our social media throughout BHM! That original window, only during BHM, might be closed! We’ve requested that they extend into March Madness, because we want them to stay available to fans. We’ll let you know for sure! Meanwhile, to stay updated, please follow us on Instagram (@blackfives) or Twitter (@blackfives) or on our email list (blackfives.org/join).
Thanks so much!
Thanks for giving introducing us to the women’s teams playing in that era!
You’re welcome, Judy! Thanks for your interest and support!
