The Savoy Colts were an African American women’s basketball team organized in 1928 on the South Side of Chicago as a sister squad to the popular Savoy Big Five men’s squad that was playing at the newly opened Savoy Ballroom.

Their roster included Corrine Robinson, Virginia Willis, and Lula Porter, formerly with the local Roamer Girls, and they were joined by future Basketball Hall of Fame member Ora Washington, an import from Philadelphia.

The Colts traveled and played throughout the Midwest, inspiring a new generation of African American female athletes.
