Poison, That’s All
There’s only one professional basketball team in the New York area that was always great, every year.
So, New York City, the boroughs, New Jersey, Long Island, upstate, Connecticut … if you have nothing whatsoever to cheer about right now, with your sorry overpaid under-managed pro basketball franchises of today, please feel free to talk trash about your very own New York Renaissance Big Five.
1946-2007 New York Knicks 2,399-2,354 .5047 1967-2007 New Jersey Nets 1,082-1,428 .4311 1923-1949 New York Rens 2,588-529 .8302
The stats don’t lie.
it’s important for the people coming behind us to know the legacy these men left for us. as a young man being expose to some of these legends, you look back on the lifr lessons you’ve learned
Hey Mr. Campbell, I am humbled by your knowledge and by your first hand experience having lived through this time and witnessed the impact of the New York Rens. People may not know yet but remember, at least they are on this blog, so that right there is a beautiful thing that is full of possibilities!
this was best the best of that era gone by but people dont know they were the world champions and the first black team to achieve this honor i cannot believe that the fisrt two responses did not know this —
many of us playing basketball in harlem during the 50!s and 60!s had a chance to be taught the naunces of the city game by the likes of john-boy wonder issacs, lew badger, pop gates, pughie bell, charley isles-sr,hank dezonie, frank forbes,eddie/sonny younger, dollie king, fats jenkins-there are many more that to this legacy..
Casey this was a cartoon in a newspaper from the late 1920s.
Awesome!!! Love that poster – what are the details behind that?
The Rens were surely among the best of their time, but wouldn’t it be a great project to comprehensively record their Wins & Losses around the country, taking Dr Susan Rayl’s goal to fruition? Against some rivals the record might be surprising. For example, the season before the Rens beat OshKosh for the World’s title they dropped 6 of 7 games to the AllStars. Imagine how Tarzan & Fat felt by beating a team in the Big Show that had haunted them previously. Humanizing the Rens, putting their accomplishments into perspective, makes them all the more remarkable.
