salute the efforts of Claude Johnson and Bill Daughtry to bring a largely hidden heritage to public awareness. As a history professor at LIU Brooklyn for many years, I particularly relished the portrait of William “Dolly” King who made a vital contribution in breaking color barriers in professional basketball with the Rochester Royals after a stellar career at LIU. Other transformative figures–Jackie Robinson and Paul Robeson–have propelled my research into print because not only do these “Black Heroes in Sports” elevate the field of dreams; they also “make America,” in the trenchant words of African-American poet Langston Hughes, “America again!”
